FILM REVIEWS & CRITICISMS & ETCETERAS

My most recent publication (2003) was an essay on the film Wings of Desire in the journal Film and Philosophy. This paper is drawn from a larger set of "notes," most of which are found in rough form on this site. I also presented a piece of this work-in-progress at the Society for the Philosophical Study of the Contemporary Visual Arts at the 98th Annual Meeting of the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association in 2001. Unfortunately, I was presenting at the same time that Umberto Eco was speaking next door... meaning I missed hearing him, and many missed hearing me.

During the mid-90's, I reviewed movies (films?) for a weekly newspaper in Northern California. To the left are links to some of the film reviews I wrote during that time. These reviews have also been published as part of the Internet Movie Database; were featured on the resources list for the Mercer University "Intro to Film" course; CineZine; and continue to appear in surprising places online, though too often with the wrong URL! For example, according to the rating system at Lycos, my reviews were "top rated" (one of about 25 sites tied for the top rating) but the URL they have is no longer the correct one. This issue (incorrect URLs) seems to haunt me. Another example: Sophia A. McClennen's article "Chilex: The Economy of Transnational Media Culture" cites my view on Radford's Il Postino, in the University of Washington's journal, Cultural Logic but you'd never be able to get from her bibliography to my web site without manually searching via an intermediary.

Of course, the items that seem to get the most links (not hits via search engines, which would be the reviews) are my works in sociology. (See the "Misc" section, at left.) For example:
