Iraklio, the largest city on Crete, was our first stop. We flew from San Francisco to Paris to Athens to Crete/Iraklio, picked up a car, and drove around town until we found our hotel. It made for a long day and I was glad we had booked a hotel ahead of time...

As you can see, we had a lovely view of the harbor, with the old Venetian fortress, right outside our window. The museum in Iraklio contains many key finds from the Minoan era, including a cool bull's head (think: This is the place where the Minotaur lived). The guide books are right: Visit the museum after seeing the sites.
