Malia, on Crete, was our jaunt on Christmas day. It seemed like a long shot that they wouldn't have it closed and locked on a holiday, but we drove out there along the coastal road, anyway, just in case. It was, indeed, closed, so we visited the seaside, and took a scenic route back to Iraklio.

Mikines (Mycenae) was a fortress where many of the Greeks who went off to fight the Trojan War in Turkey hailed from. This is one of those places that Homer's characters are fighting to return to, in the Odyssey. Here is what the Hellenic Ministry of Culture has to say about Mikines.
