greece 2002/3: nafplio
Previous page 13 of 15 Next

Nafplio is a charming little town, with a few historical sites (such as a cool-though-apparently-not-real-effective Venetian fortress that fell to the Turks shortly after being built) and excellent proximity to Mikines and Epidavros. If you want to get your hotel of choice, it probably makes sense to book ahead: We wandered into town and found good accommodations but all the places recommended in the guidebooks were full. The museum is worth checking out.

Nafplio was our first stop after Crete. For some reason, we didn't end up eating a lot of Greek food on Crete. By the time we got to Nafplio, we were able to pick out better places, and it was here that I fell in love with several dishes that would become the center of many meals: fried cheese, big (giant)beans, and "Greek salad".
