| greece 2002/3: athens - the acropolis |
|
Athens was our last stop. In terms of major sites, it was the most modern on our itinerary and was the pinnacle of Ancient Greece. The Acropolis here was one of the last sites we saw.
Ironically, at this last site was only the second time we hired a guide -- and our first guide had been at the first sight we saw, Knossos on Crete. I think we would have hired more guides, but during the winter there were few offering their services at each location. (They are licensed, so you're guaranteed a basic level of knowledge, and it's nicer to have someone talk about things as you're looking at them, rather than reading in a guidebook as you walk around: Guidebooks are best the night before.)
The bad news about our time in Athens: The National Archeological Museum was closed for renovations. Luckily, there are good little museums at most sites these days, including an Acropolis Museum with key items from the area.
