The Temple of Olympian Zeus, in Athens, was once the largest Greek temple. Back in the distance there is a stadium, first built for olympic-like games, and then rebuilt for the modern Olympics, a bit over a hundred years ago. (This will be where the opening ceremonies for the 2004 Olympics occur.) In the other direction is the Acropolis.

The Theatre of Dionysus, at the foot of the Acropolis, is the place where all the heavyweights first had their plays produced. It's a trip to think about the cult of Dionysus, with all its excesses, and plays like Oedipus being performed here, criticizing the government that created what we have left of ancient Greece, on the Acropolis. (Yes, one can read Sophocles' play as a criticism of Perikles.)

And it was lovely to be able to visit with some real Greek folks while in Athens. The sister of one of Dannette's colleagues lives in Athens with her husband and two daughters. They were kind enough to take us out on New Year's Day, show us around, and enjoy a long lunch.
