London Trip 2001

Dannette snapped the pix that document much of our trip. She used a digital camera attachment for her Handspring Visor PDA. Not real high resolution, not a great lense, but very handy. I've tried to add a few notes to her photos, to give them some context (in addition to what Dannette's captions tell you). They are informal jottings -- please excuse the gaffs. And at the bottom of this page, we have a second gallery of photos, higher resolution, that I took on film.

The pieces missing are, of course, the places we went each night, since theaters and concert halls are not eager to have one taking photos. With one exception, we went out on the town each night to theater, music, etc., and those evenings out were, easily, many of the trip's key highlights.

It's also tough to document the gastronomic joys that London proffers these days -- and there are a lot of them. Luckily, we did a lot of walking while we were there, in addition to the eating...

There are about 90 photos in all, but don't worry: I haven't written long-winded captions for most of them. To get a flavor for what set the stage for our appreciation, you can peruse the guide we used (Lonely Planet) or slightly more arcane resources (like this).

Enjoy the photos.

The first evening one arrives in Europe, there isn't much you can do: If you've been on a plane for 10 to 15 hours, your body thinks it's the middle of the night, but the local time begs to differ. What we've found is that a nice walk, light meal, and some coffee carry us into the local time's evening enough that once we head to sleep, we've already forced ourselves to ignore the jet lag. Our walk in London, after taking the tube from Heathrow to Gloucester Rd in South Kensington took us to a local cafe (pictured later) in the French neighborhood... and then to the lower part of Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall (more later) and the Albert Memorial, right across the street from the Royal Albert Hall.
